Pictured here are the great trio of the Das Reich Division (from left to right): SS-Hauptsturmführer Helmuth Schreiber, SS-Standartenführer Heinz Harmel and SS-Sturmbannführer Günther Wisliceny. They were photographed in Stepanovka on the Mius Front in the beginning of August 1943. Schreiber was decorated with the Knight’s Cross on 30 July 1943 for capturing a hill occupied by enemy troops that threatenead the division’s ‘Deutschland’ Regiment’s flank. Wisliceny won his Knight’s Cross on the same day for skillfully leading elements of his 3rd Battalion of the ‘Deustchland’ Regiment against enemy positions. He was wounded during the charge. Harmel won his Knight’s Cross on 31 March 1943 for successfully commanding ‘Deustchland’ Regiment during the fight for Kharkov in February and the beginning of March of that year.
